Is the use of very fine needles applied to pressure points on the body. There are several acupoints on the body, and these acupoints have a high density of free nerve endings, mast cells, small blood and lymphatic vessels.
When the acupoint is stimulated with the needle, it causes a release of chemicals such as beta-endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters that have an effect on the brain. This can cause pain relief as well as other systemic effects in the body including nerve stimulation.
We have used acupuncture on some of the special needs cats here at the sanctuary that have suffered nerve damage and had great results.
