Baloo

Baloo was seen by our vet on arrival, he was too young for Xrays to be definitive but we diagnosed that he was probably born with these disabilities and so we believe his issues are congenital. Baloo has a slight tilt in his head which we think is caused by the strain of using only his left front leg as his right one was in the wrong place. He had no muscle tone in his rear legs because he had never used them to weight bare.

As Baloo is incontinent we manually empty his bladder and bowels several times a day to prevent his bladder from over filling and UTI`s and to prevent megacolon where the poop gets stuck inside and stretches the colon. Baloo still leaks urine in between these expressions though so when he is bigger we will introduce the use of nappies to keep him dry and clean and to prevent sores.

At present we are treating Baloo conservatively by doing daily physiotherapy, we aim to stabilise his front leg by using straps and splints to hold it in the correct position and then strengthen his back legs so that he can walk and stand. We are also working on his confidence as he has never walked before, and he is making great progress already.
